So.Cal Gas Company Says Yes During the Corona Virus

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

SoCal Gas Company creates partnership with the Construction Career Academy

Wallace Rawls, Los Angeles Urban League Board of Director and SoCal Gas Director of Gas System Integrity Staff & Programs, enlightens CCA Cohort #4 about job access.

As the nation's largest natural gas distribution utility, we serve nearly 21 million customers in more than 500 communities. And that's no small undertaking. Fortunately, we have great employees who thrive on challenge and get the job done. So come, look beneath the surface. We offer outstanding internship and associate positions

The Construction Career Academy (CCA) is expanding its offerings beyond the trades and now will include the utility sector. Wallace Rawls, the Director of Gas System Integrity Staff & Programs shared with the CCA that not only should students apply for construction jobs, but include SoCal Gas as you consider careers.

As a 9-year veteran with the company, Mr. Rawls talks about the expanding careers that are available due to advanced technology and quite simply, the need for qualified employees. "The biggest challenges for applicants are the exams, interviews and application. Applicants often forget to fill in boxes or answer questions completely. If you forget to answer a question, your application never makes it to the next stage of the process. It is imperative that you dot your "I's" and cross your 'T's."

Here are some suggestions from Mr. Rawls and the SoCal Gas Company website:

Application Requirements

  • A resume is required to apply for all positions. A cover letter is NOT required.

  • A candidate must have successfully completed and received their high school diploma or passed a General Education Development (GED) test. Some of our positions do require four-year or advanced degrees and/or certifications.

  • Potential employees must have proof of eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • We only accept resume submissions online. We are unable to accept resumes at any of our facilities.

The Application Process

  1. Our Human Resources (HR) Staffing team reviews all resumes and applications.

  2. If minimum requirements are met, your resume will be sent to the hiring manager for review. If there is an interest from a hiring manager, you will likely be contacted for a phone screen.

  3. Depending on the phone screen feedback, you may be invited on-site for an interview and asked to complete a workplace assessment questionnaire. The on-site interview can last anywhere from a few hours to an entire day. You may also be invited to participate in a second interview day.

  4. If you haven't heard from us within four weeks, it’s likely your resume was not a match at this time. We will, however, keep your resume on file for future consideration.

On-Site Interviews

The number of interviews you're required to attend depends on several factors, including the role, position level, availability of all involved in the hiring process and location. Typically, you will meet with between two to five interviewers. We do our best to keep the interview team as small as possible; however in a collaborative and very large business this can be a challenge. We thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

Interview Tips

We recommend that applicants do the following prior to a phone or onsite interview:

  • Review our company website to become more familiar with our business.

  • During in-person interviews we utilize the SHARE model:

    • S - Situation; introduce a specific situation to the interviewer

    • H - Hindrances; outline the challenges, constraints or hindrances you have faced;

    • A - Action; Describe the action(s) and steps you took to resolve the hindrance;

    • R - Results; outline the results or positive outcomes that came about due to your action(s);

    • E - Evaluate; evaluate for the interviewer what you gained from the experience and how it can be applied to their company or project

  • Be prepared to discuss your background and qualifications as referenced on your resume.

  • Dress appropriately and be prepared to supply additional copies of your updated resume.

  • Be on time.

Background Checks

All offers of employment from SoCalGas® are contingent upon candidates passing a background check and drug screen. A background check will consist of the following:

  • Criminal history report

  • Social Security verification

  • Motor vehicle history report

  • Employment verification

  • Education verification
